Some people call it making medicine - the process of following your heart, creating something magical, powerful, fulfilling. That is what saddle making is to us.
"We Are All Related" came to us at this time. We loved the flow of the carving on the Fleischer saddle and wanted to join this with one of our favorite themes - feathers.
Since we are connected with all other creatures on earth we added a medley of animals with a Native American fetish flavor. Some of the animals are powerful, others are playful. This all worked together with Navajo Silversmith Thomas Singer's beautiful hand made silver pieces. The turquoise was the icing on the cake.
After 33 years of saddle making and enjoying every saddle, the making of "We Are All Related" still made us walk into the studio every night to "look at it one more time"!
We are thrilled to have created number 1 of our collection. Ideas are tumbling out and we already have 10 more designs clambering to be built. We are committed to building 2 new collection saddles per year for as long as possible and welcome the opportunity to work with you.
"We named this piece for the flock of animals carved into the pattern", says Master carver Lisa Skyhorse.
"There are 33 quarter-sized fetish animals enclosed within the fully carved pattern. I designed this with one foot in the traditional world and the other in my world of unique contemporary carvings.
My desire was to achieve a classic, fully tooled look from a decidedly new perspective. By carving feathers and animals, inverting the carving, and carefully hand painting the portions of the bas-relief, a unique two-toned black and brown visual was the result.
I enjoy carving geometric images inspired by the silver, along side flowing scrolls and feathers. The juxtaposition of geometric patterns with traditional florals is a concept that that I have enjoyed perfecting over several decades. This avante-guard western look has made Skyhorse saddles famous, and it thrills me".
Another look unique to Skyhorse saddles is Loren's trademark silver edge braiding. Every edge is round-edge braided with fine silver lace - purer than sterling silver. There is 460 inches of silver braiding on this saddle,
which consumed 460 feet of fine silver lace!
The sterling silver feathers and conchos are accented with turquoise called Fox Natural from a mine in Nevada. They were all hand made by well-known Navajo silversmith Thomas Singer. The
entire saddle set has 145 pieces of silver.
This museum quality set is built in the fashion of all of the Skyhorse's high quality custom saddles, and is fully rideable.
